World Wide Web
A graphical, interactive, hypertext information system that is cross-platform and can be run locally or over the global Internet. The Web consists of Web servers offering pages of information to Web browsers who view and interact with the pages. Pages can contain formatted text, background colors, graphics, as well as audio and video clips. Simple links in a Web page can cause the browser to jump to a different part of the same page or to a page on a Web server halfway around the world. Web pages can be used to send mail, read news, and download files. A Web address is called a URL. (Source: CAMER)

4 Online Books Page (The)
The Online Books Page est créée en 1993 par John Mark Ockerbloom pour répertorier les textes électroniques de langue anglaise en accès libre sur le web. A cette date, John Mark Ockerbloom est doctorant à l’Université Carnegie Mellon (à Pittsburgh, en Pennsylvanie, Etat des Etats-Unis). En 1999, il rejoint l’Université de Pennsylvanie pour travailler à la R&D (recherche et développement) de la bibliothèque numérique de l’université. A la même époque, il y transfère The Online Books Page, tout en gardant la même présentation, très sobre, et il poursuit son travail d’inventaire dans le même esprit. En 2003, ce répertoire fête ses dix ans et recense plus de 20.000 textes électroniques, dont 4.000 textes publiés par des femmes, à savoir 20% de sa liste de liens. En décembre 2006, il recense 25.000 titres, dont 6.300 titres du Projet Gutenberg. -

Première grande communauté virtuelle en ligne, The WELL (The Whole Earth ’Lectronic Link) est créé en 1985 par Stewart Brand, éditeur du Whole Earth Magazine. The WELL devient une grande plateforme d’échange via l’internet, avec la participation de dizaines de milliers d’artistes et d’intellectuels participant à la "révolution internet". Dans les années 1990, The WELL perd de nombreux membres qui se tournent vers le web naissant, ses forums, ses BBS (bulletin board systems) et ses listes de diffusion. (web)Un annuaire web vise à recenser les sites web et à en proposer un classement thématique, le choix et le classement étant effectués par l’être humain, contrairement au moteur de recherche, qui indexe automatiquement le contenu du web. Le précurseur des annuaires web est The WWW Virtual Library, débuté par Tim Berners-Lee, inventeur du web en 1989, et devenu ensuite un annuaire coopératif réputé pour sa qualité. Un autre précurseur est Yahoo!, créé en janvier 1994 par deux étudiants de l’Université de Stanford (Californie) pour tenter de répertorier la totalité du web, et devenu plus tard un moteur de recherche, et le géant que l’on sait. Tim Berners-Lee est l’inventeur du World Wide Web (plus communément appelé web), qui voit le jour en 1989. Alors ingénieur au CERN (Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire) à Genève, Tim Berners-Lee mène un projet autour de la mise en réseau de documents utilisant l’hypertexte. En 1990, il met au point le premier serveur HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) et le premier navigateur web. Le web devient opérationnel en 1991. Tim Berners-Lee préside ensuite le consortium W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), un consortium industriel international fondé en octobre 1994 pour développer les protocoles et les standards communs nécessaires à la croissance du web. Dans un texte personnel situé sur son site (The World Wide Web: A Very Short Personal History), Tim Berners-Lee écrit: "Le rêve derrière le web est un espace d’information commun dans lequel nous communiquons en partageant l’information. Son universalité est essentielle, à savoir le fait qu’un lien hypertexte puisse pointer sur quoi que ce soit, quelque chose de personnel, de local ou de global, aussi bien une ébauche qu’une réalisation très sophistiquée." Jerry Lang et David Filo, deux étudiants de l’Université de Stanford (Californie), lancent en janvier 1994 un annuaire dénommé "Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web". Rapidement rebaptisé Yahoo!, cet annuaire vise à recenser les sites web, avec classement effectué par l’être humain, contrairement au moteur de recherche AltaVista, entièrement automatisé. Quelques années plus tard, le web s’accroissant de manière exponentielle, Yahoo! devient lui aussi un moteur de recherche (en partenariat avec Google pour la recherche avancée, entre 2001 et 2003), en même temps qu’une multinationale offrant de multiples services (courriel, forums de discussion, albums photos, dépêches d’actualité, commerce électronique, etc.). En février 2004, Yahoo! lance son propre moteur de recherche, Yahoo! Search. En 2005, Yahoo! est le premier portail mondial, avec 25 versions nationales dans 13 langues différentes. Yahoo! rachète également plusieurs start-ups aux créneaux prometteurs (Flickr, Del.icio.us, Jumpcut, Upcoming.org, Bix), la plus connue étant Flickr, un site permettant de poster ses photos, racheté en mars 2005. Lancé en août 2005, Yahoo! Music est une plateforme de vente de musique en ligne.
